The fear that fasting eats your muscle is real, but a controlled 16:8 trial in trained lifters tells a more specific story about what protects muscle and what doesn't.
If you lift, the worry is specific and loud: skip breakfast, fast for 16 hours, and you'll watch the muscle you worked years for slide off along with the fat. It's the number-one reason gym-goers won't touch intermittent fasting. A team in Italy did exactly that, and the results are more useful than either the "fasting wrecks your gains" camp or the "fasting is magic" camp wants to admit.
The short version
In an 8-week randomized trial, resistance-trained men who ate all their food in an 8-hour window lost far more fat than a matched group eating on a normal schedule, and they held onto their muscle and strength while doing it. The catch matters, though: their protein stayed high and they kept training hard. Fasting didn't protect their muscle. Protein and lifting did. The eating window mostly helped scrape fat off the top. One group ate all their food in an 8-hour window (meals at 1 p.m., 4 p.m., and 8 p.m.) and fasted the other 16 hours. The other group ate on a normal schedule with breakfast. Both groups kept the same resistance-training program, and here's the part that makes the study worth reading: the two groups ate the same number of calories and the same macro split, protein included. This wasn't fasting versus eating more. It was the same food, different timing.
After eight weeks, the fasting group lost about 16.4 percent of their fat mass. The normal-schedule group lost about 2.8 percent. That's a big gap for eating the same amount. And the muscle? Fat-free mass held steady in both groups, and the cross-sectional area of their arm and thigh muscles didn't shrink. Leg-press strength went up in both groups with no real difference between them, and bench-press strength held. So the lifters compressing their eating into eight hours got leaner without giving back muscle or strength.

Why the muscle actually stayed
This is the sentence to underline: the fasting didn't preserve their muscle, their habits did. Two of them.
First, protein. The fasting group averaged around 22 percent of a roughly 2,800-calorie intake as protein, which lands near 1.8 grams per kilogram of bodyweight. That's a lot, and it's squarely in the range that research on body recomposition points to for holding muscle in a fat-loss phase. Cram all that protein into eight hours or spread it over twelve, the muscle-protecting signal is mostly about the total and the training, not the clock.
Second, they kept lifting. Muscle is expensive for the body to maintain, and it'll let it go if nothing is asking it to stay. Resistance training is that ask. This is a study about lean, experienced lifters who ate well and trained through it, not a promise that any fasting schedule protects muscle by itself.
How to fast without giving back muscle
The practical takeaways fall out of the study cleanly. Keep your protein up, roughly in the 1.6 to 2.0 grams per kilogram range if you're trying to hold muscle while losing fat, and actually hit it most days rather than guessing. Keep resistance training on the calendar two to four times a week. Don't crush your calories to nothing on top of the fasting window, since a brutal deficit plus no protein is how muscle actually goes. And break your fast with a protein-forward meal rather than a pile of fast carbs, so the first thing you do after the fast supports the muscle instead of just spiking your blood sugar.
The real limiter here is that most people fasting for weight loss aren't tracking protein at all, and that's usually where the muscle worry becomes real. Not because of the fast, but because they're under-eating protein and skipping the gym.
